Your boat moves through the water at its speed through the water; the water itself moves over the ground. Add the two and you get speed over ground - what actually gets you there. Fair tide (current flowing your way) adds to it; foul tide (against you) subtracts. Tidal current is not uniform. The departure lever beats the route lever

Boaters spend hours optimizing which way to go and minutes deciding when to leave - it should be the reverse. On a tidal route, shifting your departure by two or three hours to carry a fair current often saves more time than any rerouting, and costs nothing. Time the constrictions first; refine the line second.

Here is a trap worth naming. General ocean-current layers in weather apps show mean circulation - the broad, slow drift of the sea - and badly understate the strong tidal flow that pulses in and out of inlets four times a day. For timing a passage you need actual tidal current predictions, the kind national agencies compute from harmonic constants at thousands of stations. In US waters, NOAA publishes exactly this - flood and ebb timing, direction, and velocity - free, at inlets and channels nationwide.

Beating dead upwind, a boat sailing at 45 degrees makes good only about 70 percent of its speed toward the destination, so an upwind leg can take 40 percent longer than the straight-line distance suggests. Stack a foul tide on top of a beat and the passage balloons; catch a fair tide on a reach and it flies.
