#How a weather router works
Three ingredients go into every routing engine. First, a route or a set of candidate routes over water. Second, a forecast along those routes: wind speed and direction, gusts, wave height, period, and direction, hour by hour. Third, and this is the part that separates routing from a plain forecast overlay, a performance model of the boat, called a polar. The engine then simulates the passage: at each step it looks up the conditions at the boat's position and time, computes the boat's speed on that heading in those conditions, and advances. Repeat across candidate routes and departure times, and the plans rank themselves.
That is why the same forecast produces different answers for different boats. Fifteen knots on the beam is a sailboat's best day and barely matters to a trawler. A polar diagram records how fast a boat goes for every combination of wind speed and wind angle. Racing crews measure theirs; cruisers can get most of the value from presets.
