European waters are the densest cruising grounds on earth - the Solent, the Baltic archipelagos, the Med's island chains, the Atlantic coast from Galicia to Brittany - and the planning data landscape looks nothing like America's. There is no free NOAA equivalent for official charts, but Europe quietly publishes something the US does not: EMODnet, a continuous high-resolution depth model of every European sea. Here is how route planning actually works on the European side, and which tools cover it.

#Depths: EMODnet is Europe's open secret
The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) publishes a harmonized digital bathymetry for all European waters, assembled from hydrographic office surveys - and serves it as free map tiles. It is not a navigation chart (no buoys, no regulations), but as a planning depth layer it is higher resolution than the global GEBCO model and covers everywhere from the Norwegian fjords to the Aegean. #European weather: same engines, different personality
The forecast models behind window scanning are global - and the best of them, ECMWF, is European to begin with. So departure scans, comfort ratings, and weather routing work identically in the Ionian and the Chesapeake. What changes is the weather's character. Northern Europe runs on Atlantic frontal systems and serious tide gates (the Alderney Race and Portland Bill are timing problems, not weather problems). The Med runs on named local winds - Mistral down the Rhone, Meltemi through the Cyclades, Bora in the Adriatic - which build from calm to force 8 in hours. Hurricane feeds cover the Atlantic and East Pacific, but a Meltemi never gets a name. #Tides: the north-south divide
Brittany sees 12-meter springs; the Med barely moves. Northern European passage planning is therefore tide-first: departures keyed to gates and streams, with the weather window fitted around them. A planner needs to handle both instincts - distance and ETA math everywhere, tidal awareness where it matters, wind vigilance where it rules.
