Finding one is not about a perfect forecast; it is about matching the forecast to your route and your boat, and being ready when the gap opens. #What makes a window a window
Three inputs define it. Your limits: the wind speed and wave height where the trip stops being fun (or safe) for your boat and crew - a 40-foot trawler and a 22-foot center console have different numbers. Your exposure time: a 6-hour hop needs 6 good hours; a 30-hour passage needs the window to hold across a day and a half, along the entire track. And the forecast trend: a window at the front of an improving trend is worth more than the same numbers at the tail of a deteriorating one, because forecasts miss late more often than early.
#The Gulf Stream crossing, worked
Florida to the Bahamas is the classic window decision. The Stream flows north at 2-4 knots; any wind with north in it blows against that current and stacks the water into short, steep seas far worse than the same wind over open ocean. The working rules: no crossing on north winds (NE, N, NW) above roughly 10-15 knots; south through east winds under 15 knots are the friendly quadrant; and give a cold front a day after passage before trusting the leftover sea state. A 50-mile crossing at 8 knots is 6-7 hours of exposure, so the window has to hold that long plus margin - which usually means leaving before dawn on the first good day.
Run the same route scan on two global models - ECMWF and GFS. When both paint the same window, confidence is high. When they disagree by a day or 10 knots, the atmosphere itself is undecided: treat the window as unconfirmed and check again in 12 hours. Agreement, not any single model, is the real signal.
