EU ETS calculator for shipping
What will carbon cost on this voyage? Pick two ports and your vessel's consumption — we route over real sea lanes and return the allowances due under the 2026 rules (100% phase-in, CO₂ + CH₄ + N₂O), the euro cost at your EUA price, FuelEU Maritime penalty exposure, and an indicative CII rating.
Real routes, not guesses
Scope depends on the actual legs sailed. We compute the voyage over the global shipping-lane network, then apply the intra-EU / extra-EU 50% rule and at-berth coverage automatically.
2026 rules built in
100% phase-in, methane and N₂O included, EU/EEA port detection by UN/LOCODE, your own EUA price — the number that belongs in the voyage estimate and the charter negotiation.
FuelEU + CII too
One pass also returns FuelEU Maritime intensity vs target with the €2,400/t penalty formula, and an indicative CII rating against the IMO reference lines.
Frequently asked
Is this EU ETS calculator free?
Yes — 5 voyage estimates per day, no account. Pick two ports, enter speed, consumption and fuel, and get allowances due, cost at your EUA price, FuelEU Maritime exposure and an indicative CII rating. Volume users can run the same calculation over the Route API from $49/month.
How is the EU ETS cost calculated?
The route is computed over the global shipping-lane network, fuel burn comes from your consumption and speed, and emissions use the EU MRV default factors per fuel. Scope rules are applied automatically: 100% of emissions between two EU/EEA ports, 50% to or from an EU port, 100% at berth in EU ports — then the 2026 phase-in (100%, including CH₄ and N₂O) and your EUA price give the euro cost.
What changed in 2026?
Two things: the phase-in reached 100% (2024 was 40%, 2025 was 70%), and the scheme now covers methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) alongside CO₂. 2026 is the first year shipping pays full price on all three gases.
Who actually pays — owner or charterer?
The compliance obligation sits with the shipping company (DOC holder), but under most time-charter clauses the cost passes to the charterer, who controls routing, speed and fuel. Under voyage charters, owners price ETS into the freight. Either way, the cost belongs in every voyage estimate.
What is FuelEU Maritime and the penalty?
Since January 2025, the GHG intensity of energy used on EU-related voyages must stay under a target (89.34 gCO₂e/MJ through 2029). Conventional fuels exceed it, creating a compliance deficit that costs €2,400 per tonne of VLSFO-equivalent energy — unless offset by pooling, banking, or cleaner fuels. The calculator shows your exposure per voyage.
Is there an API for this?
Yes. The Marine OS Route API includes a /v1/emissions endpoint returning the full breakdown — emissions by gas, EUAs due, ETS cost, FuelEU balance and penalty, CII — for any port pair, with every assumption overridable. It powers voyage estimators, freight platforms, and chartering tools.
How accurate is it?
Distances come from the same engine behind our Route API; emission factors are the published regulatory defaults, and every assumption is shown and overridable. It is built for pre-fixture decisions and cost allocation. Official reporting still runs through your accredited MRV verifier.
Need this inside your systems?
The Emissions API returns this full breakdown — per gas, EUAs due, € cost, FuelEU balance, CII — for any port pair in one call. Built for chartering desks, voyage estimators, and freight platforms.
