A real day on the water is rarely A to B. It is the fuel dock, then the sandbar where your friends raft up, then the waterfront restaurant with the dinghy dock, then a quiet anchorage for the afternoon, then home before dark. Five stops, and here is the part almost everyone gets wrong: the order you visit them in can change the total distance by a third or more. Delivery companies figured this out decades ago and built an entire software industry on it. Boaters still plan multi-stop days by gut feel. This guide covers how to do it properly.

#Why stop order matters more than you think
Picture four stops around a bay: your marina on the west shore, a fuel dock to the north, a beach bar on the east side, and an anchorage to the south. Visit them in the order you thought of them - fuel, beach bar, back past the marina to the anchorage - and you crisscross the bay twice. Sweep them in a loop and every leg is short. Same stops, same boat, and the difference is routinely an hour of running time and a chunk of fuel. On a displacement trawler burning at cruise, an unnecessary 12 nautical miles is real money; across a season of weekend trips it is a three-figure sum and many hours of engine time.
Mathematicians call this the traveling salesman problem, and its defining feature is that human intuition handles it badly once you pass four or five stops. The number of possible orders explodes: 3 movable stops have 6 orderings, 6 stops have 720. Somewhere in that pile is the shortest day, and eyeballing a chart will not reliably find it. #Water makes it harder than roads
Delivery software measures distance along streets. On the water the equivalent is distance along the navigable line - around the peninsula, through the inlet, outside the shoal. Two stops that look adjacent on the chart can be 15 nautical miles apart by water because a spit of land sits between them. Any ordering decision built on straight-line distances will pick wrong exactly when it matters most. The distances that feed the ordering have to be routed distances over water you can actually use.
Some stops are not movable: a restaurant reservation at 13:00, a fuel dock that closes at 17:00, a bridge that only opens on the hour. Lock those into the day first, then let the flexible stops - the sandbar, the swim anchorage, the photo spot - fill the gaps in whatever order makes the loop shortest. Optimizing around fixed points is still optimization; it just has fewer choices to make.
#How to plan a multi-stop boat day, step by step
- 1List every stop with a real position - not "the beach bar" but its coordinates or the marina entry. Vague stops produce vague plans.
- 2Mark which stops are time-fixed (reservations, operating hours, tide-limited entries) and which are flexible.
- 3Get water distances between the stops, not straight lines - route each leg the way you would actually run it.
- 4Choose the order that minimizes total distance while honoring the fixed times. Under six stops, software can check every possible order and give the exact best answer.
- 5Sanity-check the winning order against conditions: an exposed leg is better run in the morning calm, and a following sea beats a beam sea even at the cost of a mile.
- 6Add ETAs at your cruising speed, and margins: dinghy time, fuel-dock queues, and anchor-setting all eat the clock.
