The classic boat day has a shape everyone recognizes: top up at the fuel dock, run to the sandbar while the water is glassy, waterfront lunch when the family gets hungry, a swim anchorage for the afternoon, home before the seabreeze chop and the sunset glare. Five stops. The families that come home relaxed and the families that come home fried at 7 pm usually visited the same places - in a different order. This is the guide to building a day-trip itinerary that flows: sequencing, timing, and the fuel math, plus how to compute the order instead of arguing about it at the helm.

#The skeleton: what is fixed, what floats

Start every day-trip plan by splitting stops into fixed and flexible. Fuel is effectively fixed first: you want the full tank at the start, the morning queue is shortest, and nothing ruins an afternoon like detouring to fuel mid-day. Home is fixed last. A lunch reservation is fixed in time (13:00) but its position in the route order depends on where the morning takes you. The sandbar and swim anchorage are flexible - they go wherever they make the loop shortest, subject to one big exception: conditions.

The exception matters. Sandbars are a morning stop almost everywhere: the water is calm before the seabreeze fills in, the crowd is thinner, and a mid-tide arrival keeps the approach honest. An exposed swim spot with an afternoon fetch becomes a rolly mess by 15:00. So the real method is: fix fuel first and home last, pin the timed stops, give conditions a vote on when the sandbar happens, and then let the ordering of what remains be a pure distance question.

The 30-minute rule

For every stop, add 30 minutes to whatever the running time says: fenders and lines at a dock, two tries at an anchor set, the dinghy shuttle, the goodbye lap at the sandbar. A five-stop day carries about 2.5 hours of non-running time. If the running math plus stop overhead passes 9 hours, cut a stop - the last one you added, not the one everyone came for.

#A worked day

Marina on the west shore of the bay; fuel dock two miles north; sandbar on the northeast shoal; lunch dock southeast across the channel; swim anchorage tucked south. Typed in the order the family suggested them - sandbar, lunch, swim, fuel, home - the boat crosses the bay four times and gets fuel at the worst moment. The computed order - fuel, sandbar, lunch, swim, home - is one clockwise arc: every leg short, morning glass at the sandbar, lunch at the dock at noon, the protected anchorage during the windy hours, and a downwind run home. Same five stops. The zigzag version runs about half again as far and puts the longest leg into the afternoon chop.
